Lazarakia

Lazarakia a greek easter custom

Easter is one of the most important religious festivals devoted to Jesus’ Crucifixion
and Resurrection.Easter customs start on Saturday before Easter which is known as “Lazarus
Saturday”. Children go round from one house to another, holding baskets full of
spring flowers and they sing Lazarus carols. These carols refer to Lazarus death- he
was Jesus’ close friend- and his celebratory resurrection by Jesus.
Lazarus is here
Palm Sunday is here
Jesus from Bithynia is also here
And He cried: “Martha, Maria,
Where is my friend, Lazarus?”
“Lazarus has been dead for three days”
“Show me his grave, show me his tomb”
“I have shown you his tomb; I am showing you his grave”
Another custom of this day is “Lazarakia”. It is about small loaves of bread having the shape of a human being. The carol singers are offered eggs, sweets, flowers and money in return and they wish
“Many happy returns” and “Have a nice Easter holiday”
